How to Hire Me… a Millennial

Millennials, long derided for our need to have a purpose in our work; now can pick any job we want.

As an employer, capturing the interest of the elusive Millennial may feel like caging the wind. Higher wages, better hours, Foosball tables, and flexible schedules still don't seem to be working.

So how do you stand out in this tight labor market?

It's both simple and almost impossible. The few 'Pied Pipers' with a trail of Millennials in tow are playing this song:

'There is Purpose in my work and I can grow here.'

As a Millennial, I watched my parents get chewed up in the system. Working with my dad outside in 90-degree heat, with a brandished 80-pound compressor on his shoulders' he would often say, "Don't do this job… don't get stuck like me."

We Millennials fear working for just a paycheck… we fear getting stuck… we don't want to become a modern version of bonded slaves

So how does this help you?

First, the nearly impossible: Your workplace culture needs to be authentic and thriving…

The second is much more straightforward: Share your glorious purpose as much as you can… let your people share their connection to the purpose… let us see it in action! Show how we can grow...

Dump the videos about perks and money… it's not as important to us.

Create videos about your culture… show Millennials how to join your purpose and how they can grow. HR videos should be Anthemic, derived from an authentic place, and reflective of the true identity of your team. If we Millennials are going to spend most of our lives at work… we better believe it's for a higher purpose.
